Contemporary Authors Stick Together

AKA: Julie James is the coolest! I've been a fan of Julie's ever since her first contemporary romance came out, set in the legal world and full of smart people bantering and falling in love with wit and verve. In fact, Julie's success in the sometimes-maligned subgenre of contemporary was part of what inspired me to write my own books; I knew it could be done, and done well.

So it's a huge thrill for me to be over at her blog answering questions today! She posed some fun ones, and I'd love to get some more from you guys, so head on over. I'm giving away an apron and spatula set to one commenter...and I might throw in a couple of my favorite Julie James books, just for fun!

Current Obsessions: The Food Edition

Every now and then, I like to take a step back from my everyday habits and look at what it is I'm currently addicted to. Sometimes it's a particular TV show I can't stop watching on DVD, sometimes it's a song on endless repeat, sometimes it's an author whose books I've read multiple times but just can't seem to quit.

This time, they're all about food. Huh. Go figure! Anyway, here they are, in no particular order:

1.) Sriracha -- This is an Asian condiment, sun-ripened chilies ground with garlic and sugar to a smooth paste guaranteed to ignite your palate and brighten the flavor of whatever you put it on. I can't take much of it, but even a few drops are enough to get you hooked on the criminally addictive combination of spicy, salty, and sweet.

2.) Momofuku -- Clearly, I'm on an Asian kick. I just got back from NYC, where I had a little of every Asian cuisine I could get my hands on, so sue me. And what with one thing and another, most of my meals seemed to revolve around David Chang's chain of phenomenally popular, revolutionary restaurants. Whether it was ginger-scallion ramen at Noodle Bar, chicken and lemongrass banh mi at Ma Peche, or crack pie at Milk Bar, I was all over it. And now that I'm home, I'm finally digging into one of my coolest birthday gifts from last year: the Momofuku cookbook! It's amazing, seriously. Chang's voice and style come through loud and clear in every single recipe, and his story is a fascinating one. And then there are the recipes themselves! I can make my own ginger-scallion noodles now--and believe me, I plan to.

3.) Bolthouse Farms Perfectly Protein drinks -- My favorite, by far, is Mocha Cappuccino. Coffee, low-fat milk, cocoa, vanilla, and all of that bumped up with extra protein and amino acids. I'd drink it to be healthy, but honestly, I just love the way it tastes.

So what are your current food obsessions?

I know, I've been promising all kinds of stuff like Bocuse pics and whatnot, but I've been crazed! And today, I have even cooler news than that, so here it is.
On the Steamy Side is a real book! I'm so in love with that cover, I want to run away to Aruba with it. My husband says he totally understands, and wishes me well. Yay!

To celebrate the pretty, and its imminent release into the wild (March 2nd, y'all!) I'm running a Twitter contest until midnight tonight for the chance to win one of my precious few advance copies of the book.

All you have to do is retweet the following post:

How do you #GetSteamy? RT and @ reply w/answers for chance to win an early copy of On the Steamy Side! http://bit.ly/bxCHyv

An RT gets you one chance to win; if you follow that up with an answer to the question, you get two shots! Just be sure your answer includes the hashtag #GetSteamy, or it won't count.

Good luck!

Snowpocalypse!

Actually, Snowpocalypse 2010, or as some people are calling it, Snowmageddon, turned out to be more like Snowtopia for us--we got stuck in Manhattan! Tragic, I know. Okay, working out the flight home was zero fun, but we finally made it, and our extra night in town was well worth the hassle. We braved the snow drifts and made our way up to the Upper West Side, our old stomping grounds, and visited my favorite NYC restaurant, Ouest.

I can't even fully described why I love that place so much. It's partly the fantastic, hospitable bartenders, partly Tom Valenti's menu with its unique, eclectic offerings like Truffled Omelet Souffle Mousseline, Roasted Bone Marrow with Short Rib Marmalade, Shallots, Parsley and Apple Salad, and the most perfect pan-roasted chicken you'll ever taste. I was elated they were offering one of my favorites in their Simple Grill section--rack of lamb. SO. EFFING. GOOD. Perfectly cooked lamb, smoky from the grill, served over pesto-toasted bread slices. Nestled around the plate are softly caramelized whole cloves of garlic, the perfect accompaniment. I ate waaaay more than I meant to.

Anyway, thanks to the travel craziness of the last few days, I haven't put up my Bocuse pics yet. They're coming, I promise! In the meantime, if you haven't had enough of me already, there's an awesome interview posted on the Women On Writing site. Check it out! They asked some really interesting questions.

Barefoot and Bocuse

Sorry I've been out of touch for a while; I'm traveling! I know, you're shocked. But this time it's for work! Really! I met Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, and attended the Bocuse d'Or USA Finals at the Culinary Institute of America, and it was all for work. I *love* my job. : )

First off, the Ina thing. Awesome. She's essentially the smartest, most charming, down-to-earth woman alive. She was at the NY Women in Communications Cocktails and Conversation series, talking about food and branding, and just...wow. I LOVE her. My favorite of the pearls of wisdom she dropped all over the stage like a flower girl scattering petals down the aisle was the concept of "true North"--Figure out what matters to you, what *is* essentially you, your true North, and never let your compass waver from that direction. Anything that pulls you away from it should be avoided. Anything that speeds you toward it? Embrace with open arms. That was the other thing she said that struck a chord--you can't sit on the sidelines, you have to dive in, get wet, mess around and try things.

Nothing earth-shattering, perhaps, but very reinforcing. I had a blast, and also signed my very last advance reading copy of On the Steamy Side to her, so that was fun. Also, they gave out cupcakes, because it was her birthday! I love the NY WICI!

Since the Bocuse post is going to be loooong and full of pictures, I'm going to stop here for today. If you follow me on Twitter, you've probably seen most of them already, but tomorrow's post will provide more commentary than 140 characters allows, so there might be some fun, new stuff.

And speaking of fun, new stuff, Amazon and Macmillan are playing nicely again which means that I have a fun, new price for the Kindle edition of Can't Stand the Heat! List price from SMP at $6.99, which Amazon discounted to $5.59. Get it while it's hot, in case it's a mistake! LOL
